Women in the arts industry all over the world face various challenges in their bid to rise to the top of their game and women in Ghana are not left out. From cyber bullying to name calling and body shaming, the Ghanaian woman in the arts industry is faced with rising obstacles which sometimes make it difficult for some to realize their dreams.
Perhaps movie producer and director, Yvonne Nelson has revealed the biggest challenge a woman may face yet by detailing how her contract with an unnamed telecommunication was abrogated simply because she was pregnant.
Yvonne who said the issue broke her down at the time narrated that it was in her third trimester of her pregnancy when the company called that she shoots an advert for them in Nigeria. But knowing her condition and having hid it from the public, she finally went straight and said she was pregnant and that she cannot do the work she was being asked of and that was it. End of contract. This is just but one of the many untold stories of how women in the arts suffer to make it to the top.
Yvonne was answering a question about the challenges women face in the arts industry during an event yesterday at the Accra Tourist Information Centre. The event had in attendance female musicians, actresses, bloggers, event organizers and many more.
