Let’s Consider Community Service As Part Of Prison Sentences – John Dumelo
The state of the Ghanaian is nothing to write home about. Overcrowding, Low quality foods, Diseases, Drug abuse, just to mention a few are all issues that keeps popping up whenever the quality of our prisons is mentioned.
And according to Ghanaian actor and farmer, John Dumelo, we can help better our prisons by looking at alternative sentences, one of which is Community Service.
He was reacting to a news item on twitter posted by Accra-based Citi Fm where it was reported that two people had been jailed for 25 years for stealing GHc 480 and a mobile phone.
Mr. Dumelo’s call seems to add to the growing concerns of a lack of injustice by our judicial system where “big people” who have been alleged to have embezzled state funds are allowed to walk freely and ordinary citizens are given huge prison sentences for offences like stealing paltry sums of monies and other comparatively smaller crimes.
We urge our celebrities to add their voices to social issues like these and help bring some change to our society.
We also appeal to the judicial service to reconsider this sentence and other similar ones because if our prisons is really for reformation, then this is not the way to go. In as much as we condemn stealing, jailing someone 25 years for stealing GHc 480 and a mobile phone is never the best solution.
