All too soon, we’re drawing curtains on a year filled with opportunities, failures, tears of joy and pain, good times and bad times and what have you. 2019 has without a doubt, served its bit and more with God’s plan for our lives carried out each day. Evidently, if you’re alive reading this piece, then there’s so much to be grateful for!

This particular year marked the year of a decade (calculated from 2010) and more importantly, the Year of Return on Ghana’s historical calendar. Yes! 400 years of slavery and toils yielding to the life and freedom we enjoy today, is worth the commemoration and celebration. And what better way to reminisce the plethora of historical feats by our forefathers if not to join hands with our brothers and sisters; friends and familywho have been away from “home” for a very long time.

Believe you me, the jolly good times this year has witnessed cannot be counted. In fact, the many wonderful memories created in honour of the Year of Return alone might have just bloated our calendars and made our days like never before. If you doubt this, just take your time to recollect some of the news that made the year of return a vibely one.1. Boris and Friends

Our first memory to share would be that of our early birds who visited somewhere last year around this time (December). Yes! If you recall, we had several visitors, mainly Hollywood actors and actresses including their families, who flew in to experience the festive season in Ghana and more so, celebrate the year of return. American rapper Diggy Simmons, actors and actresses: Danny Glover, Idris Elba, Anthony Anderson, Rossario Isabel Dawson, Nicole Aris Parker (wife of Boris), Noami Campbell (American model) et al, who were followed by Ghanaian-born-American Hollywood actor, Boris Kudjoe, to come and celebrate the “Full Circle Festival” as part of the year of return.

2. Michael Jai White Enstooled As Chief of Akwamu

This news was as striking as a hammer on a hot rod! Not that the Hollywood actor being enstooled as a chief was a bad thing…but who’d have thunk? Out of the blue, Michael is hailed Nana Akoto III, Odupong (The Tree With Strong Roots That Does Not Fear The Storm).…well, so were the speculations. But further information later explained that the Hollywood actor really does hail from a royal family and that his enstoolment was indeed rightful. Taking away the surprise this news came with, there were lots of smiles and joy expressed knowing that our very own and one of Hollywood’s favorite was home.

3. Steve Harvey Sheds a Tear at The Castle

It’s somewhat a national tradition to make sure that almost every international visitor that passes through must tour our popular sites. Well, Steve Harvey was not excluded from the lot. The famous American TV host and actor with his family, returned home (to Ghana) to pay a visit to his motherland and join us in celebrating the year of return. During his stay, he toured some of the beautiful sceneries/ sites in the country and while on tour at the Cape Coast castle, he was somehow touched by the history narrated by the tour guide and bowed down to shed some tears.

While you were busy catching up with the “Mr. Eventuarrys”, “The Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy VGMA Beef”, “The ShattaWale Getting a Beyonce Feature” trends and whatnot on social media, some notable international acts were equally tweeting hints of paying visits to Ghana for the Year of Return.

5. The Return Only Gets Hotter

Apparently, the best of the most was saved for the very last of the 365 days…. and I do mean THE BEST! This very month (December) summed up the whole 2019 in 31 days of thorough excitement. To no surprise, the numerous activities even stole attention from the birthday boy (Jesus) on his birthday (Christmas). Ghanaians did the most in turning up the whole city and showing our visitors the swell times, they’d never forget and more so, making sure that every penny they spent coming to Ghana was worth it. Right from LiveSpot X concert featuring Cardi B down to Afrochella… No be small “Partee after Partee” vibes oo! Concerts spearheaded by Wendy Shay, StoneBwoyKwaw KeseShatta Wale, King Promise, Lynx Entertainmentand of course the king himself, Sarkodie, kept the city woke from dawn till dusk with so much entertaining heat. Trust me, if you haven’t walked through a sweaty crowd this year of return, then you’re in the wrong Ghana.

Let’s not forget our African stars who equally contributed to the jamming memories of the Year of Return: Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Koffee, Teni, Zlatan, Kranium, et al.

Certainly, there’s a memory or two in 2019 to jog into the new year with. What’s your #Yearofreturn moment that’s not in this piece? Share with us in the comment section below.
