A letter from Manhyia, on 22nd April, 2020, issued a halt to all media hostilities and in it carried a moment for a proper in-house cleaning amidst incessant saga that had been rumbling the great club and this led to the formation of the Lydia Nkansah led committee which was given a month’s mandate.

Fast forward on May 28, 2020, another letter came from Manhyia enlisting the new direction of this club. There was a moment of joy when Manhyia finally announced such great news but some of us were still coy on this. I asked myself a lot of questions.

Why this time when the work of the committee is not completed? Why the rush when there’s no football being played now and even in the foreseeable future? What did that mean for the future of the current Board Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei, who was the armour bearer in the very same management which was under a rigorous review. What if the committee findings indicts him? Was he still going to continue? But who am I to question the great King? He in his own wisdom felt it was the right time.

On June 3, 2020 this very same committee asked for not a week but another whole month extension of their mandate. Finally the work of committee is done and dusted having submitted it’s report to Manhyia and further recommendations to the board.

The only thing that was holding back the board from the appointment of the CEO was the report and which is now in.

Barring any last minute hitch up, this week promises to be the most important week for all concerned for arguably the biggest sporting brand in Ghana that is Asante Kotoko. The imminent appointment of the affable Nana Yaw Amponsah as CEO could be made official this week.

According to close sources at Manhyia, he was introduced by the board to Manhyia after a board meeting on Thursday, July 16. Finally the Kotoko Project is about to take off.

One may curiously ask what new does he bring on board when Kotoko on countless occasions in the past, has appointed seasoned football administrators with no little to no impact on the fortunes of the club? There had even been a lot of speculations surrounding this said position.

A lot of names popped up in the media space but Nana Yaw Amponsah’s name stood tall. In fact there were initial rumours that he had been swerved even after he had met the board for an interview. This was further fueled when the special aide to the Chief of staff, Mr. Kofi Aboagye, made comments which many saw as a dig at Nana Yaw Amponsah.

As stated early on what new does he bring on board with his youthful exuberance into a portfolio where more experienced ones have failed. What will be the core mandate of this our new, young and vibrant CEO as his imminent confirmation draws closer?

One thing that has over the years damaged this great club is the frosty relationship between the board and the CEO as time goes on. It is an open secret that Dr. Kwame Kyei, then executive chairman, had issues with a number of his management members and this should be avoided by Nana Yaw Amponsah if he is to succeed as a Kotoko CEO.

Nana Yaw is known to be a young man with so much football brains, intelligent and passionate about what he does. I believe his kind is what the club needs now to fulfil the mandate by Manhyia to the board. I have no doubts that with his expertise, he has the potential to bring back the glory days of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Now on the appointment of his management members, the Kotoko brand has already been soiled with so much negativities which far outweighs the positives hence the new board of directors together with the CEO, ought not to kowtow to the high level politicking in Krobea. This has been the bane of all the problems of Kumasi Asante Kotoko. Let the head that fits the crown wear the crown. I leave with this , if it must be done it must be done well.
