The quarter finals of the 2019 edition of the Total African Cup of Nations has started by producing one of the shocks of the tournament.
Benin who are still winless in the tournament has dramatically sneaked their way into the quarter finals of Africa’s premier football event by beating Morocco 4-1 on penalties.
Morocco came into this game as favorites having won all their three group games, keeping three clean sheets in the process while Benin qualified as as one of the best third placed teams by drawing all their three group games.
It was the underdogs who took the lead in the 53rd minute through M. Adilehou but Morocco equalized after striker Y. En-Nesyri scored his second goal of the tournament in the 75th minute.
With the game edging into extra time, the Moroccans could have won it at the death but H. Ziyach could only send his penalty against the post and the game needed extra time to settle it.
Both teams couldn’t win it in extra time even after Benin had been reduced to ten men when defender Adenon was giving his marching orders for descent towards the referee but Coach Michel Dussuyer and his Beninoise will have the last laugh after they converted all four of their kicks and the Moroccans missed two out of the three they played.
