The public affairs directorate of the police Headquarters issued a news release addressing concerns raised by the public on the misconduct of police officers on the road.
The Assistant Commissioner of police, David Eklu, listed some Dos for the public to resort to if confronted with any unnecessary stress from the police:
HOTLINES ON ROAD POLICING1. The Police Administration has activated the followinghotlines to enable members of the public especiallymotorists and passengers to reach Police authorities at thenational headquarters on their experiences with Policeofficers on the road.2. The hotlines are: i. 0550323323 for voice calls and sms onlyii. 0275000156 for voice calls and sms onlyiii. 020 663 9121 for whatsapp/ videos only3. This has become necessary as a result of complaintsconcerning Police unprofessional conduct whiles on traffic,highway patrol, barrier, snap checks among others and thesubsequent directives issued by the Inspector General ofPolice on 15/10/19 regarding measures to check suchcomplaints.4. All road users are encouraged to send videos of Policemisconduct, including pictures, whatsapp, text messagesand voice calls on Police unprofessional conduct and goodconduct worth emulating.5. MTTD: The motor traffic and transport department (MTTD)is the mandated Police unit for the enforcement of roadtraffic laws and regulations among others. They areidentified in white tunic over black trousers with a peakedcap or combo as head gear. They sometimes wear reflectivejacket on their top uniforms to enhance visibility.6. HIGHWAY PATROL: The Police highway patrol teams arebasically assigned to combat highway robberies and alsoprevent other crimes on the highway. They are mostlyidentified in normal Police operational dress and they arearmed.7. BARRIERS: Police officers at various barriers/check pointsare strategically detailed to address specific nationalsecurity concerns. They also wear Police operationaluniforms and are armed.8. Apart from the MTTD, none of the above mentioned officerson highway patrol/barrier duties are deployed tospecifically conduct motor check e.g. inspecting driver’slicenses, road worthy and insurance certificates, etc.However, any Police officer can conduct traffic relatedchecks based on reasonable suspicion of a road trafficoffence but will have to immediately hand over the case tothe Police MTTD after the preliminary action.9. Motorists are cautioned to adhere to traffic laws on the road.10. The Police Administration therefore appeals to the public togive maximum cooperation and wish to assure the publicthat such complaints when received will be expeditiouslydealt with.
