FaceApp is a mobile application for iOS and Android developed by a Russian company called Wireless Lab which uses neural network technology to automatically generate highly realistic transformations of faces in photographs.
This is done with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). An algorithm takes the input picture of your face and adjusts it based on other imagery.
This makes it possible to insert a toothy smile, for instance, while adjusting lines around the mouth, chin and cheeks for a natural look.
The app can transform a face to make it smile, look younger, look older, or even change gender. FaceApp was launched on iOS in January 2017 and on Android in February 2017.
Besides, the app has attracted criticism in both the press and on social media over the privacy of user data. In response to questions, the company’s founder, Yaroslav Goncharov, indicated that user data and uploaded images were not being transferred to Russia but instead processed on servers running in Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services in US.
More than 100 million people have downloaded the app from Google Play. And FaceApp is now the top-ranked app on the iOS App Store in 121 countries, according to reports.
The app’s terms and conditions suggested user photos could be used for commercial purposes, such as FaceApp’s own ads.
